Prof. Omondi Ogutu at the ISSHP Conference in Sao Paulo-Brazil.
The International Society for the Study of Hypertension in pregnancy held their 20th biannual congress in the city of Sao Paulo from October 23-26th at the Maksoud Hotel.
The meeting was attended by clinicians and researchers from all over the world.
During the congress there was a meeting of the joint ISSHP ISOM Global Health Committee Meeting.
Prof. Omondi Ogutu, the Head of the Department of Obstretrics and Gynaecology at the College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi is a member. The committee deliberated on how to improve access to published research materials and increased collaboration between the high income and LMICs.
During the congress emphasis was made on early diagnosis and treatment of the Hypertensive disease in pregnancy (HDP).

There was also emphasis that HDP especially preeclampsia should be considered as a placental syndrome. The role of biomarkers for early prediction was put forward but with emphasis to obstetricians to be weary and not rely only on the results.
The role of the of syncytiotrophoblast and the abnormality of the spiral arteries as an aetiological factor was put forward. The next congress will be Amsterdam in 2 years’ time.
