THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI “ACTION TRIAL” TEAM CONDUCTS SITE VISITS AT PARTICIPATING HOSPITALS IN KENYA

From 6-8th November the ACTION ( (Antenatal CorticosTeroids for Improving Outcomes in preterm Newborns) -  UoN team comprising Prof Zahida Qureshi, Prof Fred Were, Dr John Kinuthia, Dr Alfred Osoti, Dr George Gwako and Dr Ahmed Laving visited the participating hospitals to conduct site visits in readiness for initiation of the study in early 2018. The study will run over a period of two years.

The trails are multi-country, multi-centre, two-arm, parallel, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of antenatal corticosteroids for women at risk of imminent birth in the EARLY preterm period (ACTION I) AND LATE preterm period (ACTION II) in hospitals in low-resource countries to improve new-born outcomes.

In KENYA, the study sites are Coast General referral hospital, Nakuru level 5 hospital, Thika level 5 hospital and Kiambu Level 4 hospital.

WHO has supplied Ultrasound machines, CPAP machines and Pulse Oximeters to each of the participating sites.
