THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI “ACTION TRIAL” TEAM PARTICIPATED IN THE PREPARATORY WORKSHOP FOR PARTICIPATING HOSPITALS IN KENYA

From 6-8th December 2017 Dr Joshua Vogel (Technical Officer, Maternal and Perinatal Health and Preventing Unsafe Abortion in the Department of Reproductive Health and Research) from WHO conducted the preparatory training workshop at the Silvers springs hotel Nairobi.

The facilitation team comprised Prof. Were, Prof. Qureshi, Dr. Kinuthia, Dr. Laving, Dr. Osoti and Dr. Gwako. The participants from each hospital comprised the 0B/GYN, Paediatrician, Radiologist / Ultra sonographer, nurse in charge of neonatal unit, midwife in charge of labour ward.

The WHO ACTION (Antenatal CorticosTeroids for Improving Outcomes in preterm Newborns) Trials will be conducted in Kenya, Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The trails are multi-country, multi-centre, two-arm, parallel, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of antenatal corticosteroids for women at risk of imminent birth in the EARLY preterm period (ACTION I) AND LATE preterm period (ACTION II) in hospitals in low-resource countries to improve new-born outcomes

In KENYA, the study sites are Coast General referral hospital, Nakuru level 5 hospital, Thika level 5 hospital and Kiambu Level 5 hospital. The trial is expected to start in early 2018 and will recruit participants over a two year period
