On 27th June 2025, the Governor of Kiambu County, H.E. Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, in collaboration with the Department of Health, convened a high-level county-wide consultative meeting for all facilities offering maternity services—both public and private.
This initiative was in response to a request by the County Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) Committee.
The forum brought together representatives from 136 health facilities (36 public and 100 private), making it one of the largest maternal health stakeholder engagements in the county.
Key stakeholders in attendance included members of the County Assembly Health Committee and a delegation from the University of Nairobi Faculty of Health Sciences, led by Prof. Zahida Qureshi from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
A highlight of the meeting was Prof. Qureshi’s insightful presentation on several groundbreaking maternal health research projects. These include:
- PEARLS – Focused on preventing pre-eclampsia among women.
- PPH Validation – Evaluating the feasibility and adherence to the revised definition of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and its impact on clinical practices.
- REACH is using Heat stable Carbetocin for the treatment of PPH
- EMOTIVE – A landmark initiative introducing a clinical bundle for PPH prevention.
These projects aim to address two of the leading causes of maternal and newborn mortality: postpartum hemorrhage and pre-eclampsia.
Key Outcomes from the Meeting
- Adoption of Calibrated Drapes for PPH Management
Following a detailed presentation and live demonstration by Prof. Qureshi and Ms. Jenipher Okore, the county committed to rolling out calibrated drapes across maternity facilities. The tool enables accurate blood loss measurement, supporting early diagnosis and timely management of PPH. - Increased Awareness on the Use of Heat Stable Carbetocin
Stakeholders expressed strong support for the ongoing UoN-led research and its role in improving maternal care. The county continues to build on its 2024 adoption of Heat Stable Carbetocin to prevent PPH, further enhancing emergency obstetric care.
This county-funded initiative reaffirmed the strong partnership between Kiambu County and the University of Nairobi. Together, they are leading the way in maternal health innovation, with a shared commitment to significantly reducing maternal mortality rates.
