Dear UoN Staff and Students,
The University of Nairobi is undertaking a Gender Baseline Survey (GBS) under the Government of Kenya, French Government supported Engineering and Science Complex (ESC). The GBS aims at generating baseline data for initiating the UoN program for supporting women in STEM and raising awareness on gender sensitive issues. The study is using questionnaires to gather information in all faculties covering students, academic and non-academic staff members. The questionnaires will be complemented with Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), Round Table Discussions (RTD) and Key Informant Interview (KIs).
The study aims at generating baseline data for initiating the UoN program for supporting women in STEM and raising awareness on gender sensitive issues. The study has five specific objectives:
1. Analyse UoN’s mentorship programs focusing on STEM and disaggregating beneficiaries by gender and gender-related issues;
2. Assess orientation and early exposure to career opportunities programmes by gender;
3. Examine the dynamics of `safe’ spaces for interrogating gender assumptions and learning and the participation of male and females, assess the existing UoN infrastructure from a gender perspective, and elaborate gender-related requirements to inform the design of the ESC
4. Investigate the status and conduct of staff training programmes for raising gender awareness and the gender of participants.
5. Based on findings from the 4 objectives listed above, draft a gender action plan for the ESC, to be endorsed by the UoN management.
All members of staff are kindly requested to cooperate with the Research Assistants and Supervisors who have been assigned to each faculty. The research teams will closely work with respective Deans’ Offices, and campus coordinators in Mombasa, Kisumu and Koitalel Samoe campuses. Prof Winnie Mitullah of the Institute for Development Studies is leading the team as the Principal Investigator (PIs), supported by Co-PI John Njoka of IDS.
Kind regards,
John A. O. Orindi, MCIPR
