Gynaecological cancer is a major contributor to cancer mortality among women in Kenya. Kenya therefore needs more skilled professionals to create awareness, provide preventive and curative medical services to address gynaecological cancer.
The University of Nairobi (UoN) is addressing this gap through training of gynaecological oncology sub specialists through the Gynaecological Oncology Fellowship Programme. UoN is working towards establishing international collaborations to teaching, facilitate international visits to gain insights in other settings prevalence, screening and treatment capacity in gynaecological cancer and to conduct research.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University of Uppsala Hospital (UUH), Sweden is one of the highest referral hospitals for women with gynaecological cancer.
The department is a European certified centre of excellence for ovarian and endometrial cancer surgery and performs advanced cytoreductive surgery as well as minimally invasive robotic surgery.
The UUH gyn-oncology team is actively engaged in education for training in gyn-oncologic surgery and as well as in international and national clinical and epidemiologic research projects in collaboration with Upsala University.
UUH’s Associate Prof. Karin Glimskar Stalberg and Dr. Bjorg Jonsdottir, a consultant and Gyn oncologic fellow are visiting the UoN’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology gyn oncology unit for a reconnaissance visit geared towards providing a platform for bilateral teaching and learning through theoretical and hands-on guidance in the management of gynaecological cancer and establishing a collaboration between the two parties.
Dr. Henrik Makokha- Sandell, a resident Gynaecologist at Uppsala University Hospital is part of the visiting team.
